Inspiration: How to Make Homemade Tea

The heady aroma of a good cup of tea is one of the most evocative elixirs known to man.

You can create your own loose leaf mix and package them up in small parcels to drink on your own, or give as gifts, just in time for Christmas.

Use a good quality loose tea. Add ground ginger, cinnamon sticks broken into pieces, whole cloves and cardamon seeds to the mix. Dried orange peel (with all pith removed) will add a citrus tang, or you can sweeten the mix by adding finely ground vanilla sugar. Package the tea in clean glass jars decorated with a handwritten label and bow.

MYTH: Caffeine's effects are addictive

FACT: People often say they are "addicted" to caffeine in much the same way they say they are "addicted" to shopping, working or television. The term "addiction" actually refers to a strong dependence on a drug characterised by severe withdrawal symptoms, tolerance to a given dose and the loss of control or the need to consume more and more of the substance at any cost. Addicts tend to exhibit anti-social behaviour or even commit crimes to perpetuate the abuse. Consumers of caffeine-containing beverages do not fall into this category. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (1994), a document that characterises various addictions, does not list caffeine as a substance that causes addiction. According to the World Health Organisation, "there is no evidence whatsoever that caffeine use has even remotely comparable physical and social consequences which are associated with serious drugs of abuse."

Suite Coffee loves to give back to the community. Late last week, Cameron Bishop (owner) gave support to Nissan K's 4 Country Kids by sponsoring Spencer Lambert's charity bike ride on behalf of the entire Suite Coffee & elaundry team.

The funds raised go to the Leukemia Foundation to provide country kids and their families with a range of services, including accomodation, emotional support, education, transportation and practical financial assistance, all free of charge. Funds are also invested into research to find better treatments and cures.
